We see in Hebrews 2:8-9 “Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone”. To me it does beg the question, if “we do not yet see everything in subjection to Him”, what are those things that are not fully subjected?
One thing that is glaring to me is death. We still have disease and have to suffer death. There is no one who can escape death, though Jesus did rise from the dead as a hope for us. We are told in 1 Corinthians 15:25-26 the “last enemy that will be abolished is death”. Death is one of those things that God will finally abolish. One of the things that tie to this is sickness and disease, it has not yet been eliminated. In time, God will eliminate it.
We also see that there is a tension in, though Christ reigns, creation still groans for the manifestation of the sons of God, Romans 8-22-23. The manifestation of the sons of God is still waiting to happen. Man will be restored to his position as intended in the garden of Eden.
While we have a measure of Christ and the Spirit, but we are not yet fully like Jesus. In 1 John 3:2 it says “Beloved, we are now children of God, and what we will be, has not yet been revealed. We know that when Christ appears, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is”. The work that God is doing in us is not yet complete, and the full realization of that is still a mystery. But again, when He appears, we will be changed in the “twinkling of an eye”.
We are told that one day, “every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord” (Philippians 2:9-11). What a day that will be, but again we do not see “all things are subjected to Him”. The world is filled with people that are not subject to Him, and evil abounds. God could stop that if He chose to, but He is patient. As it says in Romans 9:22-24, “What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory— even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? So God is withholding His Wrath and power for a reason.
We are told in Acts 3:21-23” Heaven must take Him in until the time comes for the restoration of all things, which God announced long ago through His holy prophets. For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to Him in everything He tells you. Everyone who does not listen to Him will be completely cut off from among his people.’ There is a time coming when all things will be restored! It says Heaven must take Him until that time. There is a time coming, a time of the full restoration of all things. Jesus is in Heaven until that time.
The scriptures affirm that the Father has already placed every created thing under Christ’s feet, reserving nothing outside of His sovereign rule. Yet we do not presently see that dominion fully displayed. Believers therefore live in confident assurance of His complete authority while patiently awaiting the day when that authority becomes visible in every realm of existence.
