Nothing tends to bring the gospel more into disrepute than extravagant claims or claims which can be dismissed on natural or other grounds. I would not hesitate to say that we should be careful to attribute to the direct intervention of God only that which we have entirely failed to account for by any other hypothesis. Failure to do this will inevitably lead, eventually, to muddled thinking, which in turn will lead to disappointment and sorrow.
